Kid’s Corner January Addresses

By Jay R. Neill

The January Kid’s Corner talked about getting autographs from Presidents, Astronauts and Inventors. Here are some tips for through the mail signing, and addresses to get you started!

1. Get the Right Supplies. Use a 6×9 and 9×12 envelope. The 6×9 envelope is addressed to the celebrity. Inside this envelope will go your hand-written letter and the folded 9×12 envelope (your SASE). Including an SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) greatly increases the likelihood of receiving a response. Use Forever stamps, so you don’t have to worry that postage rates will go up before the celebrity responds. The 9×12 envelope size is important because many celebrities send back 8×10 photos. Write “Please Do Not Bend” on the front and back.

2. Make your letter stand out. For example, if you are writing an actor from the Spiderman films, apply stickers of their character. Draw a picture to include with your letter. Sometimes, the celebrity will even sign your drawing and send it back to you! In your letter, explain why you’d like the person’s autograph.

3. Get the right address. There are a whole bunch of accurate addresses right on the sheet in your hands. But there are other places to get addresses, too. Autograph Magazine features 300 celebrity addresses every month, and both students and teachers get a special education discount.

4. Include the item you want signed. Not every celebrity keeps a stack of 8×10’s at the ready, so include an item you’d like to have signed, whether it’s a print out from the Internet, a book, trading card, or CD cover. Most importantly, never send something you wouldn’t want to lose if your item never does make it to the celebrity.

5. Stay organized! Keep a journal of your requests, noting the address you used and the date you sent the letter. Besides the fun of seeing how long it takes to get a return, this way you can keep from contacting the same celebrity twice.
