Kick-off your autograph collecting fun this summer by adding a little variety and spice to your signed book collection. This month, we look at four very different authors, proving that our bookshelf is one of the only places where a vegetarian, NYC housewives, a former governor and a sizzling novelist can all come together in peace and harmony.
Jonathan Safran Foer
While every book has the potential to inspire and entertain, award-winning novelist Jonathan Safran Foer’s first foray into nonfiction, Eating Animals, has pushed the envelope even further, inciting healthy debate and igniting a movement across the globe. Combining elements of memoir, investigative journalism, science, humanitarianism and philosophy, Jonathan shines a revealing spotlight on the factory farm system that feeds most of us.
I was able to express how much his book had inspired me when I joined Jonathan on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in March. Eating Animals is one of those books that can inspire you to change your life. Of course, ever the collector, I was sure to have Jonathan ink my copy of Eating Animals after the taping.
As far as reality stars-turned-authors go, Bethenny Frankel has established a very high bar for her colleagues. Her 2009 lifestyle guide, Naturally Thin, hit the New York Times Best Sellers List. Earlier this year, she released The Skinnygirl Dish and her third book, A Place of Yes, is due in December. Bethenny provides an address on her web site specifically for anyone wishing to have a book signed.
Co-star Jill Zarin also lists an address on her web site and inked a bookplate for my copy of her new book, Secrets of a Jewish Mother (written with sister Lisa Wexler and mother Gloria Kamen). Books by other Real Housewives of New York City stars include Kelly Killoren Bensimon’s The Bikini Book, American Style, and In the Spirit of the Hamptons; Countess LuAnn de Lesseps’ Class with the Countess; and Alex McCord’s and Simon van Kempen’s Little Kids, Big City.
George Michael Leader
Unless you lived in Pennsylvania from 1955 to 1959, you might not recognize George Michael Leader’s name. He served as governor of the Keystone State during that period and, as I learned recently, was the author of two volumes of poetry. Now 92 years old, Governor Leader signed and inscribed both books in a matter of weeks.
Explore your own state’s history, and even your region’s, county’s, and town’s histories, and you might just find the next star of your autograph collection!
With a title that has proven too hot for some red-faced TV hosts to say on-air, the fabulous Jackie Collins is back bigger and better than ever with her latest page turner, Poor Little Bitch Girl. While modern in its breadth and beneath-the-sheets insider glimpses of how the rich and famous really live, this 27th novel is the ultimate escapist adventure wrought on paper. The fact that Jackie is a true gem to her fans and autograph collectors is the decadent icing on top of this red-hot literary cake.
