Another Will Smith story, to add to this other blog.
All the magazines and papers are doing stories on the new Will Smith movie I Am Legend. Aside from Smith being one of the only actors to have insane opening weekend, box office numbers, it looks really good.
He was on 60 Minutes, and every entertainment magazine. I was lucky enough to catch him on the Letterman show (right after his Eagles lost the Super Bowl). He signed autographs for fans outside, even signing a womans cell phone.
Well, the L.A. Times yesterday ran a few stories on him. One paragraph I loved:
Although many stars run for their trailers as soon as cameras stop rolling, Smith seems to revel in the public eye.
His on-set demeanor provides a primer in model movie star behavior, and recalls an earlier era when stars would court their fans. During recent filming for Sony's postmodern superhero thriller "Hancock" at the intersection of Hollywood and Highland boulevards, spectators lined up five-deep along the sidewalks. Between takes, Smith signed scores of autographs, shook hands and mugged for video cameras to the delight of the screaming hordes.
Now, that's an attitude I wish more stars had. As do other autograph collectors.
When his wife plays, actress Jada Pinkett-Smith, comes to cities with her heavy metal band, Will usually slips in a side door, and likes to avoid the attention. That's understandable. Of course, one time when their band was having technical problems, he jumped on stage and rapped for a while, to the crowds delight.
This is one class guy.
