Ever consider the worth of a Springfield rifle that was once owned by Geronimo, the Apache warrior?

Ever consider the worth of a Springfield rifle that was once owned by Geronimo, the Apache warrior? At a Bonhams & Butterfields auction that closed on November 20, someone ponied up $100,000 for just such an item. For about $35,000 less, someone got Wyatt Earp’s double-barreled shotgun, which went for $65,500. Even less expensive was a saber that was said to have belonged to U.S. Civil War general, and later Lt. Col., George Custer—it went for $20,315.

Some of these pieces came from a private collector who spent a lifetime accumulating items carried by some of the most famous, and infamous, figures in history. A 32-caliber pistol that was carried by Calamity Jane, for example, carried less of a wallop, going for a mere $4,183. The auction had over 800 other items in all.
