Dealing with Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary. And, a harp player I dig with a weird name.
I have a friend that always wants me driving to Las Vegas or Los Angeles (I'm in San Diego) for various autographs. It's driving me nuts (as a pirate might say). When I don't go, one time, he got Paul McCartney. The following year I went with him, and 85 guys were there for McCartney (me with my Beatles HELP shirt), and he waved from his Corvette but never signed. I told him that two musicians were coming to two different bookstores in San Diego this Friday. A band called The Herman's, who recently wrote a book about touring. He had never heard of them, and wasn't interested. Then, there was Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul, and Mary. He has heard of him, but has his autograph already. Me, I'm not a big fan of their stuff. And, my buddy Mike tried to get Peter before a show. It was a disaster. Peter was playing a tape recorder, and trying to re-create something on guitar. When my friend approached, he said sternly "Can't you see I'm working here?" He walked away empty handed. I'm tempted to go to the bookstore, just to tell him that story. Of course, he has a bit of a point, he was working. But still.
The funny thing is, I end up going for other musicians I love, that nobody else has heard of. That same Friday night, Magic Dick is going to be at House of Blues. No, he's not an X rated magician. He's a harmonica player that's amazing (best known for his work with the J. Geils Band). I had Dan Akyroyd sign a harmonic once outside of the House of Blues. Maybe I'll buy another one for Magic D to sign.
It's always nice starting a weekend off with an autograph.
