Ken Griffey Jr's 600th Home Run ball.
I read that Ken Griffey Jr. was injured the other day. And, it reminded me about this story I forgot to blog about.
Some guy caught Griffey's 600th home run ball. He didn't identify himself for a while. Well, it's Joseph Scherer of Ford Lauderdale. He's 52, and describes a very bizarre, detailed way he made a plan of escape for if he caught the ball.
And, the Florida Marlins confirmed that Scherer is the fan who ahs the ball. The Marlins tried to broker a deal that would secure the ball for Griffey, but Scherer is looking to sell it elsewhere.
One Miami resident named Justin Kimball had claimed the ball was taken from him and he hired an attorney. This seems to be the norm when homerun balls that break records, make it into the stands.
What Kimball didn't know, what that Scherer had thought about the possibility of things turning ugly.
So, during batting practice, he obtained a ball and tapped it into a row of seats below him. After catching Griffey's home run, it caused a mad scramble, and the extra ball acted as a diversion.
If I was the person buying the 600th home run ball, I'd also try to buy the fake ball, too. The person that got it has no use for it, knowing now that it was just put there to throw someone off. So, you offer that person a few hundred bucks. And, you have a great story to go with the two balls that you can frame or display together.
