Ruben Studdard of American Idol fame marries a woman that asks him for an autograph.
Well, it's probably the ultimate fan fantasy. You ask one of your favorite singers for an autograph, and they ask for your hand in marriage. Sure, it doesn't usually go down like that. In fact, I'm not even sure how this went down.
I do know that American Idol winning Ruben Studdard met his bride-to-be during a CD signing at a Wal-Mart in Atlanta in 2006. The 29-year-old singer said he was struck by Surata Zuri McCants beauty, and later tracked her down in the toy department and asked for her telephone number.
I actually like hearing that. Instead of just being like most singers, and asking her out right there, he thought about it. Although, that sometimes doesn't pan out. When a country singer was on a celebrity version of Family Feud years ago, he was asked to sign an autograph. He then (against his managers wishes), placed ads in a lot of papers trying to track her down, to ask her out on a date. He never did find her.
The wedding is taking place this weekend in Studdards home state of Alabama. And, he's set to release a new album later this year.
My friend Victor tried to get his autograph in San Diego a few years back. One of his people slapped the paper out of his hand. Studdard then walked back, picked the paper up, and signed it for him.
So, he apparently signs for his fans. Just watch out for his posse.
