Racer Tony Stewart once graced our list of "worst signers". Some people disagreed. This story isn't on how he deals with autograph collectors, but team sponsors.
I remember, when writing the Top 10 Best/Worst signers, regarding athletes, we got lots of letters. So people agreed, some disagreed, with our lists. That's the case with any type of list. Just look at the Rolling Stone issues. When they do a list of Top 500 albums, for months afterwards, the running letters from people about which album they forgot, overlooked, or whatever.
Well, I remember one letter coming in, about Tony Stewart. We had this NASCAR racer on the bad list. And, someone talked about how we didn't give him a fair shake.
I just read this story in the San Diego Union-Tribune, and it's probably a better indiction of his personality. After all, you can always catch someone on a bad day, that doesn't want to sign autographs. But, when someone is a jerk to the company that pays the bills...that is an indication of a lot more. Here's the story:
Don't expect to see Tony Stewart at a Goodyear tire test any time soon. And his exclusion from the elite sessions has nothing to do with his recent rant against the company.
Goodyear officials said yesterday in Bristol, Tenn., that they weren't hapy with Stewart's effort when he participated in a tire test for them last December, in Las Vegas.
"He was there, but I would say he probably really wasn't involved. He wasn't into it," said Greg Stucker, director of race tire sales.
"If he's not going to be more constructive than he has been recently or was at that test, no, he won't get another test."
Stewart tested with Jeff Burton, Kasey Kahne and Matt Kenseth, and Stucker said the two-time series champion made it clear he would have rather been "someplace else, and he really wasn't very cooperative as far as giving us feedback."
Relations between Goodyear and Stewart have been strained since he ripped NASCAR's tire provider following last weekend's race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The two-time Spring Cup champion called the Atlanta tire the worst he'd competed on at any level.
